ASL Pal Terms and Conditions

ASL Pal is made by DawnSign Press, Inc. ("DawnSign", "we"). These Terms cover the ASL Pal website, app and services. By creating an account or using ASL Pal you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy.

1Who can use ASL Pal

  • 18 or older: you can use ASL Pal on your own.
  • 13 to 17: a parent, guardian or your school agrees to these Terms for you.
  • Under 13: only through a school, family or organization account whose owner has given consent.
  • Keep your login private and your details accurate. You are responsible for what happens under your account.

2Plans, payment and refunds

  • Prices and what each plan includes are shown at checkout. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel.
  • 7-day full refund on your first subscription, any plan, once per account. After that, cancel any time in Settings and keep access to the end of the period you paid for.
  • If a price changes, we tell you at least 30 days before your next renewal.
  • The full rules are in our Refund Policy, which is part of these Terms.
Free test access: free test accounts, including Wave 1 testers, are not purchases. DawnSign may change, pause or revoke free test access at any time, with or without notice.

3Check your sign and your camera

  • Check your sign is the only part of ASL Pal that records you. When you start a check, it records a short video clip of you with your camera.
  • A clip shows your face, upper body and hands, and whatever else is in view. Keep other people out of the frame.
  • The camera is on only during a check. Lessons, games, videos and everything else in ASL Pal do not use the camera.

4What we do with your clips

We use them to:

  • check your sign and show you the result;
  • let you review your own takes and progress, and show that progress to your teacher if you are in a class or bundle;
  • improve ASL Pal's own sign recognition, so the check gets better for every learner.
You can opt out of us collecting your video at any time.
  • Go to Settings, open your profile and untick the box that allows ASL Pal to collect and use your video data. You are also asked this when you first start a lesson.
  • Check your sign keeps working. Each clip is checked on the spot and then discarded, not stored.
  • Opting out stops all future collection and all future use of your clips to improve ASL Pal. Clips we already hold are deleted within 30 days.
  • While opted out you cannot look back at earlier takes, and your teacher sees your scores but no clips.
One limit: a model trained while your clips were being collected is not retrained. Your clips are deleted, but their influence on an already-trained model cannot be removed.

5No AI mining

ASL Pal is built on AI. Check your sign is DawnSign's own sign-recognition model, and it learns from clips like yours. That is the only AI your video ever feeds. We will never:

  • sell your clips, or the measurements taken from them, to anyone;
  • publish them or put them in a public or shared dataset;
  • give them to any other company, researcher or AI service to train that party's AI;
  • use them to build a product that is not ASL Pal, or in marketing without your separate written permission;
  • use them to guess your age, race, gender, hearing status or anything else about you.

If we ever wanted to use your clips beyond ASL Pal's own sign recognition, we would have to ask you first and you could say no.

6Keeping and deleting clips

  • Clips of your takes are kept for up to [12] months so you can review your progress, then deleted.
  • Clips used to improve ASL Pal are kept no longer than [3] years. Measurements that cannot identify you may be kept longer.
  • Delete a single clip any time from your progress, or delete everything, including your account, in Settings. We finish within 30 days.
  • Clips are stored in the United States with our hosting providers. Clips reviewed by people are seen only by DawnSign staff and the fluent ASL signers who work with us under confidentiality agreements.
  • If we ask about you, for example your age range or whether you are Deaf, hard of hearing or hearing, answering is optional. We never guess these things from your video, and we share them only in totals.
Some laws treat hand and face measurements as biometric data. We do not use them to identify you and we do not share them. Where the law requires it, we ask for your separate written consent first.

7Your content and ours

  • Yours: you own your clips and anything you make in ASL Pal. You let DawnSign store, process and display them only to run ASL Pal and, unless you opt out, to improve it.
  • Ours: lessons, videos, Pallie, games, text, art and software belong to DawnSign or our licensors. Use them for your own learning, or for your class if you hold a teaching bundle. Do not copy, sell or share them outside your class, or build another product from them.
  • Be fair: record only yourself, do not harass anyone, and do not add people to a bundle who have not agreed to join it.

8What Check your sign is, and is not

  • It is a learning aid. It gives feedback on handshape, location, movement and palm orientation as the camera sees them.
  • It is not a measure of fluency, not a certification, and not a substitute for a teacher or the Deaf community.
  • Results can be wrong, especially with poor lighting, an unusual camera angle or a hand partly out of view.

9Ending your use

  • Stop using ASL Pal or delete your account any time in Settings.
  • We may suspend or end an account that breaks these Terms. Free test access, including Wave 1, can be revoked by DawnSign at any time.
  • The sections on content, warranties, liability and disputes continue after an account ends.

10No warranty and limits on liability

No warranty

ASL Pal is provided "as is". Check your sign is a learning aid and can be wrong, and we cannot promise ASL Pal will always be available or error-free.

Limits on liability

To the extent the law allows, DawnSign and its affiliates, staff and partners are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits or data, arising from these Terms or ASL Pal. Our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid us for ASL Pal in the 12 months before the claim.

11Changes to these Terms

  • If a change affects how we use your clips, we ask you to agree again before it applies to you.
  • For other changes, we post the new Terms with a new effective date. Using ASL Pal after that date means you accept them.

12Contact

ASL Pal is built for the Deaf and hearing communities together. If something is not accessible to you, tell us and we will work on it.
